Coxsackie Viral Infection
So I’ve been away a while, Madison was sick for a few days which actually ended up turning into a week and a half long virus of the mouth. Madison ended up catching Coxsackie Viral Infection basically known to a lot of people as Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.
Madison started off with a pretty high fever, which we figured she was just getting a cold again, however she also started to get a runny nose, then stomach pains. We went through the weekend thinking she had a fever. Monday came around and she started to get a bad sore on her lip, Tuesday we took her to the Pediatrician and immediately he noticed the inside of her mouth which to be honest I didn’t even notice, she had sore’s on her tongue, gums and the roof of her mouth as well as her tonsils. We immediately took good precaution and took the right steps to take care of the condition.
Unfortunately there is no medication to treat the virus but they do offer a numbing medication. Just a little pointer if your child does catch the virus infection request that the pharmacist add a flavor to the medicine as it is really unpleasant but the flavor made a world of difference to a 20 month old.
This Coxsackie Viral Infection is highly contagious, not to mention very painful. It can easily be spread from one child to the next by simple touching something just after that child has touched it. The main symptoms to look for are poor appetite; runny nose and sore throat which can appear three to five days after exposure. A blister-like rash on the hands, feet and in the mouth usually develops one to two days after the initial symptoms. In some case’s the viral infection may only appear just in the mouth.
Helpful advice to avoid your child from catching the Coxsackie virus:
There is no vaccine to prevent coxsackievirus infection. Hand washing is the best protection. Remind everyone in your family to wash their hands frequently, particularly after using the toilet (especially those in public places), after changing a diaper, before meals, and before preparing food. Shared toys in child-care centers should be routinely cleaned with a disinfectant because the virus can live on these objects for days. Kids who are sick with a coxsackievirus infection should be kept out of school or child care for a few days to avoid spreading the infection.
Quote of the night:
A new baby is like the beginning of all things, hope, a dream of possibilities.

My baby had Coxsackie virus when he was three months old. We assume my 4 yr old brought it home from preschool. But my older son never got it. Then the little one gave it to our two cousins because the day he broke out with it we didnt know what it was! Our doctor have us that numbing stuff too and i just swabbed his mouth with it every few hours for two days. He wouldnt nurse so i had to pump and bottle feed him for those two days. I had never heard of the hand foot mouth disease but I know all about it now!
Hi Danielle
I was the same way i had no clue at all what it was. Thank goodness no one in our household got it, which was a great relief…I also did the same thing swabbing her mouth a few times a day and i know the doctor said it wasn’t a cure but rather to help with the pain. It seemed like each time we used it, it was going away. Thank goodness i wasn’t nursing her any longer i stopped nursing her at 15 months old.
Definitely let other people know about the virus its really is serious and once you have experienced it then you can really feel their pain.
hope your baby gets better.
